Stroke Rehabilitation at Home in Nigdi, Pune

After a stroke, the work of rehabilitation happens mostly at home, in short repeated practice. Proper Care Physiotherapy sends a physiotherapist to your house in Nigdi to assess movement and balance, begin treatment and show the family how to help. Because Nigdi is a far zone, visits are booked in advance.

The first weeks after a stroke are a timetable problem as much as a medical one. Someone has to be present for every transfer, medicines have to be taken on time, and exercises have to happen several times a day, all while the household goes on. In Nigdi, where families are often spread between a home in one sector and jobs across the city, that timetable has to be worked out deliberately.

Our guide to stroke rehabilitation describes the stages of recovery. Here we give an example of how a week at home can be organised.

Shaping a week of recovery

We usually build the week around a handful of fixed points, then add practice around them.

  • Mornings. Sitting up, washing and dressing, because these are real tasks with real effort. The patient does what they can with the weak arm included.
  • Mid-day practice. A short set of exercises, ideally ten minutes, repeated once or twice, when the patient is rested and a helper is present.
  • Walking. A few lengths of the corridor or house, with the right aid, at set times.
  • Evenings. Light practice, then planning the next day. Tiredness is common, so we avoid heavy work late in the day.

The physiotherapist writes this down, so that a son or daughter calling from the office can check that it is being followed.

What the visits cover

The first visit is an assessment of how the patient moves in bed, sits, stands and walks, the strength and tone of the affected arm and leg, balance, sensation and any shoulder pain. We also ask about swallowing, speech and mood, and refer back to the doctor when needed. Treatment then targets the movements that matter most: rolling, sitting up, standing from a chair, shifting weight onto the weaker leg, walking, and using the affected hand for tasks such as holding a spoon.

Family members learn the safe way to help, which protects both patient and carer. Where the patient is older and frail, much of the approach overlaps with elderly physiotherapy in Nigdi, and when a fracture or operation is part of the picture, post-surgery rehabilitation in Nigdi adds to it.

Between visits, and for the carers

  • Short, frequent practice is better than one long session.
  • Encourage the patient to use the weak side in daily tasks, such as steadying a plate.
  • Keep floors dry, footwear gripping and a helper within reach whenever the patient walks.
  • Share the care: if two relatives help, both should have seen the same technique.
  • Carers need rest too. Tell us if you are struggling, and we will simplify the plan.

Hospital reviews and outings

The first trip out is usually the hospital follow-up. The physiotherapist can rehearse getting into a car or auto, managing the entrance steps and waiting in a chair. In walk-up buildings the stairs are the hardest part, and we plan for a helper at each landing. A folded wheelchair may help for the outing, even if the patient walks indoors.

Emergency signs

Call emergency services at once for any new stroke symptom: sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, new difficulty speaking or understanding, sudden loss of vision or a severe headache. Seizures, chest pain, a head injury from a fall or a sudden drop in alertness also need an ambulance.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of stroke rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Sudden facial droop, slurred speech, new one-sided weakness, or sudden confusion
  • A fall with head injury, severe dizziness, or sudden inability to stand safely
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, or rapidly worsening neurological function
  • Severe swallowing concerns or medical instability during activity

Common Questions

Stroke Rehabilitation in Nigdi: questions patients ask

My husband had a stroke and I look after him alone in our Nigdi flat. How do I manage?
Ask the physiotherapist to show you safe ways to help him turn, sit up and stand, so that neither of you is hurt. We also suggest a short daily routine and tell you which tasks he can do by himself. If you are exhausted, tell us, and the plan can be adjusted.
Can the first visit be arranged before discharge?
You can book early, give the expected discharge date, and the first visit can be set for the first days at home. Keep the discharge summary and scan reports ready.
Will he be able to walk again?
No one can honestly promise. Many people regain a good deal of walking with rehabilitation, but it depends on the stroke and the person. The physiotherapist will set small goals and review them at each visit.
Can you work with the speech therapist or doctor?
Yes. If swallowing or speech is a concern, the doctor can refer to a specialist, and we are glad to work alongside. We follow the doctor's instructions on medicines, blood pressure and activity limits.
