Coming home after a stroke is a big change for a Kothrud family. A Proper Care physiotherapist visits the patient at home, studies the route from bed to bathroom, restarts movement, balance and walking in the real layout, and shows the family how to help safely between sessions. The doctor's advice remains the guide throughout.
When a stroke patient comes home to a Kothrud flat or bungalow, the hospital's structure falls away overnight. There is no ward corridor, no rail along the wall and no nurse down the passage. There is a family, a sofa, a bathroom with a step at the door and a long list of questions. Rehabilitation at home is meant to fill that gap.
The general principles are in our stroke rehabilitation guide. Here we describe what changes when the work happens inside a Kothrud household.
Most families here live in apartments or bungalows with a mix of levels and doorways, and each has to be read for the patient who has just returned. The physiotherapist looks at the route from bed to toilet, the width of the bathroom door, the height of the commode or seat, and whether a walker or wheelchair can pass. Where the building has a lift, they check that the patient can get in and out of it safely. Where it has stairs only, they plan how the patient will leave the house for follow-up appointments, perhaps with a helper or a carry chair for the first outings.
Housing societies add small practical details. A gate register may need the visitor's name, and a lift may be reserved for a particular hour. Mention these when you book so that the session starts on time and the patient's energy is not spent waiting.
A stroke patient typically gets one hour of physiotherapy and twenty-three hours of ordinary life. The family decides how well the rest of the day goes. At each visit, the physiotherapist shows the person who helps most, whether a spouse, a son or daughter, or a paid attendant, how to assist without taking over, how to guard the patient while walking and how to avoid pulling on a weak shoulder. A short written routine is left behind. In households where children work long hours, we try to teach the attendant as well so that exercises are not missed on weekdays.
Recovery is different for each person. It depends on the type and location of the stroke, the time since it happened, other illnesses and the support available. The physiotherapist will tell you honestly what progress looks like at each review rather than promise an outcome. When the patient has also had an operation, our page on post-surgery rehabilitation in Kothrud may help, and parents recovering from a stroke are often also covered by elderly physiotherapy in Kothrud. There is more on the topic in a blog post about paralysis rehabilitation at home in Kothrud.
A new stroke needs hospital care within minutes, not a physiotherapy visit. If a patient suddenly has a drooping face, weakness or numbness on one side, slurred speech, confusion, a severe headache or loss of vision, call emergency services immediately and note the time symptoms began. Chest pain, a seizure, a fall with head injury or a hot, swollen calf also need urgent medical attention.
For ongoing rehabilitation, you can request a visit on the appointment form. The full list of localities is on our Kothrud home physiotherapy page.
At Home
The usual course of stroke rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.
Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

Patient Reviews
After my mother's paralytic stroke, home treatment was our only option. The doctor worked extensively on her arm movement and balance in her own room. Big improvement in her confidence.
My father suffered a mild stroke 4 months ago leaving his right side weak. Proper Care physiotherapists came home in Dhankawadi daily. Their patience with senior citizens is commendable. He can now walk to the balcony on his own.

After my stroke, mobility was one of the biggest challenges for me and my family. The home physiotherapy sessions were extremely helpful because the therapist could work with me in my actual home environment. The regular exercises and progression gave me confidence to keep improving.
