Home Physiotherapy in Kasba Peth, Pune

Physiotherapist home visits in Kasba Peth, Pune, for people in old wadas and heritage lanes: knee and back pain, stroke, surgery recovery and elderly care.

Kasba Peth is the oldest residential quarter of Pune, a compact neighbourhood beside Shaniwar Wada where families have lived in the same lanes for generations. Anyone looking for a physiotherapist in Kasba Peth meets the same problem sooner or later. The lanes are barely wide enough for a scooter, the stairs are steep, and the person who most needs treatment is often an older relative who rarely goes out. Proper Care Physiotherapy comes to the house instead.

This page explains how home physiotherapy in Kasba Peth is arranged, what a very old neighbourhood changes about treatment, who we usually visit, and how to book. It also links to the pages for the neighbouring peths of Somwar, Mangalwar, Raviwar, Budhwar and Ganesh Peth, each of which has its own local detail.

A physiotherapist who comes to a wada or a walk-up flat

Our physiotherapists travel from our base on Katraj–Kondhwa Road. The usual route runs north along Pune–Satara Road to Jedhe Chowk and then up Shivaji Road towards Shaniwar Wada, with Kasba Peth lying next to it. Part of Satara Road has been narrowed by the underground metro work between Swargate and Katraj, so we agree a time window with you rather than an exact minute, and we tell you if the physiotherapist is running late.

From the main road onwards the last stretch is usually on foot. Equipment is kept light for that reason. What the physiotherapist needs from you is a place to work: a firm bed or mattress, a sturdy chair without wheels, and a few free steps for walking.

Reading the neighbourhood: temples, wadas and craft lanes

Local histories describe Kasba Peth as barely a square kilometre between the Mutha river and the Nagzari stream. Kasba Ganpati, the village deity of Pune, anchors it, with a wooden pillared hall at the front. The Lal Mahal replica stands close to Shaniwar Wada, and the Shitole and Mujumdar wadas are listed among the old houses. Lane names such as Tambat Ali, where coppersmiths and brass workers once had their workshops, and Shimpi Ali, the tailors' lane, still say what each corner was for.

This matters in practice for two reasons. First, addresses are described by temples, wadas and lane names far more often than by door numbers, so a good landmark saves a lot of searching. Second, many homes were built before anyone thought of lifts, wheelchairs or walking frames. A bedroom may be up a wooden stair, the bathroom across a courtyard, and the front door a step above the lane.

Stairs, thresholds and the courtyard

A wada is built round an open courtyard, with stone walls and wooden stairs, and families do still live in them. Next to these stand later buildings with steep concrete flights and a shared landing. We approach each as an exercise space rather than an obstacle.

  • Stair practice. The physiotherapist counts the steps, notes which side the rail is on, and chooses a landing where a rest is possible. Climbing practice starts when it is safe, with someone alongside.
  • The courtyard. An open courtyard is often the safest place to walk in the house. We use it for gait training once the patient can stand steadily.
  • Thresholds. The raised sill between rooms, the step to the bathroom and the low floor seat in the prayer corner are all points where older people stumble. Small changes, such as a firm chair beside the prayer corner, usually cost very little.

When the building itself is a concern

Pune's civic body has surveyed the old peths for dangerous wadas for years. In June 2023 it reported demolishing unsafe wadas in Kasba Peth and six other peths, and in June 2026 it told the occupants of 36 unsafe wadas to vacate before the monsoon. Not every old house is at risk, and we are not qualified to judge a structure. But if your family has received a notice, or if a parent is about to move to temporary housing, tell us when you book. Physiotherapy is easier to continue through a move if we know the new address and the new staircase, and moving is itself a tiring time for an older person.

What Kasba Peth residents usually ask us about

The neighbourhood has long-settled families, temple-centred routines, small workshops and shops, and a high share of older residents. The requests follow from that:

Craft lanes and the working day

Kasba Peth has long been a place of small trades: brass and copper makers in Tambat Ali, potters at Kumbhar Wada near the river, tailors in Shimpi Ali. Work done on a low stool or a floor mat brings its own load: squatting strains knees and hips, hammering or stitching loads the neck and wrists, and bending over a bench tires the lower back. If you work at home or in a small workshop, show the physiotherapist your usual position and tools. A change of height often matters more than any single exercise.

Getting to and from Kasba Peth

The underground Kasba Peth metro station on the Purple Line opened on 29 September 2024, and a pedestrian subway links it to Sattoti Chowk. For a patient who is steady on their feet, it makes hospital and follow-up trips easier than the old bus-and-rickshaw journey. For someone just home from surgery, we usually advise a car or autorickshaw door to door at first, and the metro later.

Looking after a parent from a distance

Many of our bookings here come from a son or daughter who has moved to a newer part of the city, or to another country, for a parent who prefers the family house. If that is your situation, give us the parent's phone number, the name of a neighbour or relative who can open the door, and a time when you can be on the phone for the first ten minutes. We can then explain the plan to both of you, and the exercise sheet can be passed on in writing. Our guide to physiotherapy for older people at home answers common questions.

The peths around Kasba Peth

These neighbourhoods are close together and several share the same lanes, so we treat them as one visiting area. Each has its own page:

  • Somwar Peth: the next peth east of Kasba Peth, with Shahu Garden and a large hospital listed in local records.
  • Mangalwar Peth: the quarter between two old streams, where a municipal hospital and medical college stand.
  • Raviwar Peth: the wholesale cloth, jewellery and plastics market.
  • Budhwar Peth: home to Dagadusheth Halwai Ganpati, Tulshibaug and Appa Balwant Chowk.
  • Ganesh Peth: a dense, older residential and market quarter in the centre of the city.

Further out in the old city, see home physiotherapy in Sadashiv Peth and Nana Peth. North along Shivaji Road, Shivajinagar has its own page, as does Camp across the river. If you are unsure whether your address is within reach, ask when you book.

What the first visit includes

  1. Questions first. How the problem began, what eases or worsens it, and your medicines. Please keep discharge papers, scan reports and prescriptions to hand.
  2. A check for warning signs. Symptoms that need a doctor are screened before any treatment.
  3. Looking at real movement. Rising from the bed or floor mattress, walking to the toilet, and the staircase if it matters to you.
  4. Examination. Joint movement, muscle strength, balance and sensation, as the problem requires.
  5. First treatment. Where it is safe, treatment can start during this visit.
  6. A plan for the days between. A few exercises, what to avoid for now and how a relative can help.

We do not promise a recovery date. Progress depends on the condition, how long it has been present, other illnesses and how regularly the exercises are done. We do promise to say plainly whether the plan is working.

Signs that need a doctor, not a physiotherapist

Seek emergency care without delay for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, a drooping face or slurred speech, chest pain or breathlessness, a hot, swollen and painful calf after surgery, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or a limb that looks deformed after a fall. If any of these appear during a visit, treatment stops and you will be advised to see a doctor. It can resume once a doctor has cleared it.

Common Questions

Home physiotherapy in Kasba Peth: questions families ask

Can a physiotherapist reach a house in a lane too narrow for a car?
Yes. Travelling light by two-wheeler and then on foot is how most old-city visits work. Tell us the nearest temple, chowk or shop, and describe the last stretch: how many steps from the lane, whether there is a gate, and whether a scooter can be left nearby.
My mother lives in a wada that the municipal corporation has warned about. Can she still have physiotherapy?
Treatment can go ahead, but safety comes first. We are physiotherapists, not structural engineers, so we cannot judge the building. If an official notice has been served or you see cracks, sagging floors or loose stairs, please follow the authority's advice, and tell us if the family is moving so that the plan can follow her to the new address.
Is it practical to book a visit near Kasba Ganpati during festival days?
It can be, but crowds around the temple and the roads that lead to Shaniwar Wada slow everything down. Book early, give us a landmark on the quieter side of the lane, and be ready to accept a different day if traffic police closures make the usual route unreliable.
Do you treat people who live alone while their children work elsewhere?
Yes, and many sessions are arranged this way. We can speak to the family by phone, send the exercise plan to a relative, and keep it short enough for the patient to manage alone. If someone else needs to be present for stairs or transfers, we will say so.
Which pin code does Kasba Peth use, and does it matter when booking?
The Kasba Peth post office uses 411011, while Raviwar Peth and Budhwar Peth use 411002. For a visit, a recognisable landmark and the building name are more useful than the pin code, because house numbers in the old peths can be hard to follow.
