Stroke Rehabilitation at Home in Narayan Peth, Pune

After a stroke, the home becomes the place where recovery either continues or stalls. In Narayan Peth the rooms are often small, the doors narrow and the stairs steep. A physiotherapist visits, assesses movement and balance, trains the patient and the family in safe transfers, and plans walking practice that fits your house.

A stroke often changes more than the weak arm or leg. It changes who in the family does what, and how the home is used. In Narayan Peth the setting adds its own challenges: rooms that open into one another, narrow door frames, high thresholds at the bathroom and a staircase that may now be a barrier to everything outside.

The stroke rehabilitation guide explains how recovery works and what the therapy aims for. This page looks at doing it well in an old-city home.

Making a wada or walk-up work for recovery

  • Narrow doorways. A walking frame or a wheelchair may not pass. The physiotherapist tests what the patient can use in the doors that exist, and shows the family how to assist from the weaker side.
  • Thresholds and raised steps. The bathroom lip, the kitchen platform and the step between rooms are the places where a foot catches. They are practised, one by one.
  • The courtyard or passage. A short, level path inside the building gives the first space for walking beyond the bedroom, without the risk of the lane outside.
  • Floor-level life. If the family eats or prays on the floor, getting down and up is a task in itself. We plan for a stable chair first and return to floor sitting only when it is safe.
  • Stairs and follow-up trips. Getting down to a doctor's appointment is a project. The physiotherapist prepares the patient and the person assisting, step by step.

What home sessions cover

The first visit records how the patient moves, what they can feel, how well they balance, whether swallowing, speech or memory seem affected, and how the family currently helps. The physiotherapist also asks about blood pressure, other illnesses and medicines, and about any therapy already begun in hospital.

Treatment works on rolling, sitting up, standing, stepping and walking, and on the use of the weaker arm and hand. Exercises are repeated many times because the brain relearns through repetition. Families are taught how to help without taking over, since doing everything for the patient slows recovery. Where pain or tightness in the shoulder or leg gets in the way, manual techniques may be used; manual therapy at home is described on its own page. For the later stage of regaining steadiness, see elderly physiotherapy.

What the family can do between sessions

  • Practise the exercises the physiotherapist set, in short, frequent rounds rather than one long one.
  • Stand on the weaker side when helping with walking, and let the patient do as much of the movement as they safely can.
  • Keep the walking route clear of mats, wires and low stools, and keep a light on in the passage at night.
  • Support the arm on a pillow when sitting, and avoid pulling on it when helping the patient up.
  • Note any new symptoms and report them to the doctor, not only the physiotherapist.

When another stroke or a complication is suspected

A new weakness, a drooping face, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or a severe headache means an emergency, so call for an ambulance and go to hospital without waiting for the next session. A hot, swollen calf, chest pain or breathlessness also needs urgent medical care.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of stroke rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Sudden facial droop, slurred speech, new one-sided weakness, or sudden confusion
  • A fall with head injury, severe dizziness, or sudden inability to stand safely
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, or rapidly worsening neurological function
  • Severe swallowing concerns or medical instability during activity

Common Questions

Stroke Rehabilitation in Narayan Peth: questions patients ask

Our home has narrow doorways and a high threshold. Can a stroke patient still practise walking there?
Yes. The physiotherapist measures the real constraints, then chooses transfers, walking aids and routes that fit them. Sometimes a small change, such as a firm stool at the threshold or a hand rail, makes a doorway usable. We do not ask you to rebuild the house.
Can we use the courtyard of our Narayan Peth wada for walking practice?
Often, yes, if the surface is level and dry and someone walks beside the patient. We check the ground first, and we begin indoors. Courtyards can be slippery after rain or when washing water has been spilt, so choose the time of day carefully.
How soon after discharge from hospital should physiotherapy begin?
As early as the treating doctor allows. Early practice of sitting, standing and walking helps prevent stiffness and weakness, and the family can learn safe handling while the patient is still gaining strength. Keep the discharge summary ready for the first visit.
Will the patient recover fully?
Recovery varies widely and depends on the type and size of the stroke, the person's general health and how much practice they get. The physiotherapist will discuss goals openly at each review and will not promise a particular outcome.
