IFT Therapy at Home in Narayan Peth, Pune

Interferential therapy, or IFT, uses two crossing electrical currents through pads on the skin to reach deeper tissues than ordinary TENS usually does. Used at home in Narayan Peth, it is meant to ease pain enough for you to exercise. The physiotherapist checks your skin, sensation and medical history first, because older skin and reduced feeling change what is safe.

Interferential therapy is a kind of electrotherapy in which two medium-frequency currents cross inside the tissues and produce a lower-frequency effect where they meet. In practice, that means a pad arrangement on the skin and a sensation of deep tingling or pulsing. It is used mostly for pain in the back, neck, hip and large joints, and for muscle spasm.

The IFT therapy guide covers the principle in general. This page is about how it is used on older skin and in an old-city home, and where the limits are.

Older skin and reduced feeling: what changes

  • Thin, dry skin. Older skin tolerates the pads less well and may redden or itch. We use clean, damp pads, lower intensities and shorter first sessions.
  • Reduced sensation. If feeling is dulled by diabetes, nerve damage or a past stroke, the patient may not notice a current that is too strong. In these areas IFT is avoided or used with great care.
  • Medicines and conditions. Blood thinners, heart conditions and diabetes affect the choice and the way we check the skin afterwards.
  • Memory and communication. A patient who cannot report discomfort reliably should not be treated with electrical current.

When IFT is not suitable

IFT is not used over a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, over the abdomen or lower back in pregnancy, over broken or infected skin, over a recent fracture site without clearance, or over a suspected tumour. It is also avoided over the front of the neck, across the chest and on the head. A suspected blood clot, particularly in a swollen calf, means the patient needs a doctor before any treatment to the leg.

How a home session with the unit runs

The physiotherapist begins by asking what the pain is like and what has been tried, and examines the area. If IFT seems suitable, the skin is checked, the pads are placed around the painful region and the current is raised slowly until you feel a strong but comfortable buzzing. The unit runs for a limited period, and you are asked often how it feels. The whole thing takes place on the bed, a chair or a firm mat, and the area is examined again afterwards.

The unit is the smaller part of the visit. After the current, you are asked to move: gentle stretches, strengthening or the activity that hurts, while the pain is eased. This is the point of the exercise. Without the exercise, the relief tends to fade within hours. If you are weighing it against simpler methods, TENS therapy is the neighbouring option, and the back pain physiotherapy page shows how it fits into a whole plan.

What the evidence says

The evidence for interferential current is limited and mixed. Some reports describe short-term pain relief, others find little difference from other forms of electrical stimulation or from sham treatment. It is mainly a way to make pain more bearable for a time and to allow exercise, and not as a treatment that repairs the tissue. We keep it only for as long as it clearly helps you.

Looking after yourself between visits

  • Check the skin where the pads were. Mild pinkness that fades within an hour is normal, but redness that lasts or blistering should be reported.
  • Keep up the exercises. They carry the benefit of the session forward.
  • Do not use heating pads or rubs on the area immediately after a session, unless advised.

When pain needs urgent review

Pain that is new, severe or accompanied by fever, weight loss, chest symptoms or loss of bladder or bowel control should be seen by a doctor first. Do not try to mask it with electrotherapy.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of ift therapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment to decide whether this modality or hands-on method is appropriate
  2. Short-term symptom relief to calm pain or tissue irritability
  3. Guided movement, exercise, and correction work once tolerance improves
  4. Progression toward function so the patient does not stay dependent on passive care

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

IFT Therapy in Narayan Peth: questions patients ask

Is IFT better than TENS?
Neither is better in general. IFT is often chosen for deeper or broader pain, such as in the large muscles of the back or around a hip, and TENS for more localised pain. The comparison also depends on the person. The physiotherapist tries the one that suits you and stops if it does not help.
Can an elderly patient in Narayan Peth have IFT?
Often yes, with care. Older skin is thinner and more easily irritated, and feeling in the legs and feet may be reduced. The physiotherapist checks both, uses lower settings, shortens the first session and watches the skin afterwards.
Does the unit need a special room or a treatment couch?
No. A bed or a firm chair is enough, since the pads can be placed with you lying or sitting. The physiotherapist checks the plug point and the surroundings first, so the session is safe in a home where wiring may be old.
How many IFT sessions will I need?
There is no standard number, and IFT is rarely the only treatment. The physiotherapist reviews whether it is helping you move better at each visit, and stops it if it is not.
