Stroke Rehabilitation at Home in Ghorpadi, Pune

After a stroke, daily rehabilitation at home can continue what hospital teams began. Proper Care Physiotherapy visits patients in Ghorpadi to assess movement and balance, teach safe transfers and walking, and plan arm and hand practice. The family is shown how to help in ways that build independence.

Coming home after a stroke is a different test from the hospital ward. A ward has rails, a flat floor and nurses. A Ghorpadi home may have a step at the gate, a narrow corridor, a bathroom with a raised threshold and a staircase to the bedroom. Rehabilitation at home is the process of making that home workable, one task at a time.

Our stroke rehabilitation guide describes the stages of recovery in general. This page describes the situation in Ghorpadi homes, many of them in established buildings where several generations live together.

Getting in, getting up and getting about

Many buildings in this neighbourhood are older, low-rise apartments or houses with entrance steps. The first questions are practical. How does the patient get from the vehicle to the door? Is the bedroom upstairs? Can a walker or wheelchair pass through the internal doors? On the first visit the physiotherapist walks from the gate to the bedroom and the bathroom, and sets priorities.

  • The entrance. Rail, step height and whether a second person can stand below the patient.
  • The bedroom. Bed height and which side the weak limb is on when the patient gets up.
  • The bathroom. Grip on the floor, a stool and where a rail can be added.
  • The route at night. Light, space and a clear path.

Some families move the patient's bed to the ground floor for the first weeks, which shortens the daily distances and avoids stairs until the patient is ready.

What a session works on

The physiotherapist checks strength and tone on each side, sensation, balance in sitting and standing, coordination and walking. A session might include sit-to-stand practice, weight shifting, stepping, walking with or without a stick, and arm exercises such as reaching, grasping and moving objects. Positioning of a weak arm or shoulder is taught to prevent pain. The aim is function: getting to the toilet, dressing, eating, and eventually walking out. Where the weakness is broad, our guide to neuro physiotherapy offers further background.

Recovery is different for each person, and we do not give a timeline. What we do is review progress every visit and change the goal when the patient is ready.

Family, spouses and caregivers

Where several generations share a building, the helper is often a spouse of similar age or a relative from upstairs. They are taught to stand on the weaker side when guarding a walk, to cue instead of grabbing, and to let the patient do tasks alone when safe. A spouse is also taught to protect their own back. The sessions also cover medicines and routines that influence recovery, such as taking breaks when tired. For other conditions in the household, the elderly physiotherapy page may help.

Travelling to appointments

Follow-up visits to the neurologist or scans mean getting through traffic near the railway crossing and the flyover works. Practise the car transfer at home, carry a folded walking aid, take a helper and allow extra time. A patient who tires may need a short rest before the appointment starts. When possible, fix hospital visits for off-peak hours.

Emergency signs after a stroke

Call an ambulance for a new facial droop, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, sudden vision loss, a severe headache, a seizure or sudden confusion. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or a swollen, painful calf also need urgent assessment.

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Sudden facial droop, slurred speech, new one-sided weakness, or sudden confusion
  • A fall with head injury, severe dizziness, or sudden inability to stand safely
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, or rapidly worsening neurological function
  • Severe swallowing concerns or medical instability during activity

Common Questions

Stroke Rehabilitation in Ghorpadi: questions patients ask

We live in an older building in Ghorpadi with steps at the entrance. Can the patient come home?
Usually yes, with planning. The physiotherapist can advise on a safe way up the steps, whether a ramp or a second helper is needed, and how to avoid going out until the patient is ready. Some families arrange the bedroom on the ground floor for the first weeks.
How do I get my father to follow-up appointments safely?
Practise the car transfer at home first, bring a helper and a walking aid, and allow extra time. The railway crossing and flyover works near Ghorpadi can cause delays, so carry water and plan rest. Ask the physiotherapist to practise the walk from the gate to the vehicle.
Should the patient exercise every day?
Short, regular practice usually works better than rare long sessions. The physiotherapist sets a daily routine of a few exercises and tells you which ones need a helper beside the patient.
Can speech and swallowing problems be treated by you?
Our visits concentrate on movement, balance and walking. Speech and swallowing are the work of a speech and language therapist, and we ask you to tell the physiotherapist about coughing or choking on food or drink so it can be raised with the doctor.
