IFT Therapy at Home in Gangadham, Pune

Proper Care Physiotherapy offers IFT, interferential current therapy, at home in Gangadham for deep aching pain in the back, hips and knees. The physiotherapist screens for safety, positions you comfortably on your own bed or chair, runs a short session and then moves on to the exercises that give lasting benefit.

Interferential current therapy, or IFT, passes two slightly different medium-frequency currents through the skin so that they cross inside the tissues. The idea is to reach deeper structures than ordinary TENS pulses with less of the sharp skin sensation, which is why it is often chosen for deep aching in the lower back, hips, thighs and knees.

We cover the technique on our IFT therapy page. Here we describe how a session runs in a Gangadham home, what it is useful for at the end of a working day, and when it is left out.

How an IFT session runs at home

  1. Questions and skin check. The physiotherapist asks about implants, pregnancy, skin conditions, circulation and sensation, then inspects the area.
  2. Positioning. You lie on your bed or sit in a supported chair so the muscles can relax. A pillow under the knees often helps for the back.
  3. Pad placement. Four pads are placed in a crossing pattern around the painful area, held by straps or sticky backing.
  4. Setting the current. The intensity is raised slowly until you feel a deep buzzing or pulsing, firm but not painful.
  5. Treatment time. Typically a short sitting of about fifteen to twenty minutes while you rest.
  6. Afterwards. The pads come off, the skin is checked again and, if the pain has eased, you start the movement or stretching programme.

The unit needs a power source, and the physiotherapist checks that the socket and your bed position are safe before connecting it.

Why it suits the end of a hard day

A lot of pain in Gangadham is built up through the day: hours on a bike or in a car crossing the chowk, standing in the kitchen, or sitting at a laptop. By evening, the muscles around the lower back or hips are tight and sore, and the exercises feel out of reach. A brief IFT session can ease that deep ache enough to allow a stretching routine. It fits alongside sciatica treatment in Gangadham for leg-related pain and with the strengthening approach on our knee pain page.

What the evidence supports

Studies of IFT for pain give uneven results, and reviews generally find that its benefit over other treatments is small or uncertain. Many physiotherapists still use it because patients often report short-term relief, and because it can be combined with exercise at little risk. We therefore tell patients plainly: it may help you move more comfortably for a time, but it does not fix the underlying problem and is no replacement for exercise. If a few sessions bring no change, we will stop using it and put the time into something more useful.

When IFT is not suitable

  • With a pacemaker or similar implanted electronic device.
  • Over the abdomen or pelvis in pregnancy, and over the front of the neck.
  • Over an area with a suspected clot, an infection, a tumour or an open wound.
  • Where you have reduced sensation, such as in advanced diabetic nerve damage, since you might not feel an over-strong current.
  • Over thin, fragile or recently irradiated skin, which burns more easily; older people and those on blood thinners are checked with particular care.

What should you feel, and what should you report?

You should feel a steady, deep buzz that is clear but comfortable. Tell the physiotherapist straight away if you feel stinging, burning, a sharp or pinching sensation, dizziness or nausea. Mild redness under the pads that fades within an hour is common. Pain that does not improve, grows worse, or comes with fever, weight loss, new weakness or numbness needs a medical examination rather than more electrotherapy.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of ift therapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment to decide whether this modality or hands-on method is appropriate
  2. Short-term symptom relief to calm pain or tissue irritability
  3. Guided movement, exercise, and correction work once tolerance improves
  4. Progression toward function so the patient does not stay dependent on passive care

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

IFT Therapy in Gangadham: questions patients ask

How is IFT different from TENS?
Both send current through the skin to reduce pain. IFT uses two medium-frequency currents that cross in the tissues and is usually chosen for deeper, aching pain. TENS uses lower-frequency pulses and is often used for more surface or nerve-related pain. The physiotherapist picks whichever suits your problem.
Does the home need any special arrangement for an IFT session in Gangadham?
A bed or a supported chair, and a plug point close by. The physiotherapist checks that the socket is safe and that the cables will not trail across a walking path. Wear loose clothing that lets you expose the area.
Will IFT remove my pain permanently?
No. It can give short-term relief that lets you exercise more comfortably. Lasting improvement depends on exercise, posture changes and treating the cause of the pain.
How many IFT sessions will I need?
It depends on the problem and your response. We review after the first few sessions and stop using IFT if it is not helping.
