IFT Therapy at Home in Bibwewadi, Pune

Interferential therapy, or IFT, passes two crossing electrical currents through the skin to reach deeper tissue than a standard TENS unit. A Proper Care physiotherapist can use it at your Bibwewadi home for pain that sits deep in a hip, back or knee, after checking it is suitable. It is used briefly, so that exercise can do the main work.

Some pain sits deeper than the surface: in the hip joint, the muscles around the lower back, the knee. Standard electrical pain relief may not feel as if it reaches there, and interferential therapy was designed with that in mind. Our IFT therapy page covers the general method. Here is how it is used on a home visit in Bibwewadi, and how to decide whether it suits you.

How the current works

Interferential therapy uses two medium-frequency electrical currents delivered through four pads. The currents cross in the tissue under the skin, producing a low-frequency effect where they meet. The aim is to deliver stimulation to deeper tissue while the skin feels less discomfort than with low-frequency currents. The effect on pain probably involves a mix of blocking pain signals and encouraging the body's own pain relief, and some people also find that it relaxes tight muscle.

The evidence is modest. Studies of IFT for pain show mixed results, and benefits, when they occur, are usually short-lived. For that reason we treat it as an add-on. Its role is to reduce pain for long enough that the person can exercise, walk or move more normally, and that is what produces lasting improvement.

What a home visit with IFT looks like

  1. Assessment first. The physiotherapist examines the problem and decides whether electrotherapy is useful at all. Many visits include none.
  2. Checks before the pads. Skin condition, sensation, medical history, implants and medicines are reviewed.
  3. Setting up. Four pads are placed in a crossing pattern around the painful area. You are in a comfortable position, such as lying on your bed with pillows or sitting in a chair with the leg supported.
  4. Increasing the intensity. The current is raised until you feel a firm, comfortable pulsing. It should not hurt.
  5. During treatment. A session usually runs for a limited time, and the physiotherapist stays in the room to check how you feel.
  6. After. The skin is checked, and exercise or hands-on work follows while the pain is eased.

Who should not have IFT

The safety checks are similar to those for TENS, with a few additions around the abdomen and lower back. IFT is not used for people who:

  • have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electrical device;
  • are pregnant, over the abdomen, lower back or pelvis;
  • have a clot in a vein, because stimulation could in theory disturb it, or a swollen, tender calf that has not been examined;
  • have skin that is broken, infected or very fragile, which is more common in older people, or areas with reduced sensation;
  • have a known or suspected cancer in the area, or an unexplained lump;
  • are unable to report what they feel, for example with significant confusion.

If you have any metal implant near the area, tell us. It is not always a barrier, but it changes how we decide.

Pain that IFT does not address

IFT cannot fix a mechanical cause such as a stiff joint, weak muscles or a nerve being compressed. If your pain is eased by IFT but returns whenever you stop, the next step is to look for the cause, which is what manual therapy and exercise address. For pain running down a leg, see sciatica treatment in Bibwewadi, and for knee pain see knee pain physiotherapy.

Care after a session

  • Mild redness from the pads fades within a short time. Tell us if it lasts or itches.
  • Use the relief to move more, not to rest more. Do the exercises you were given.
  • Drink water, and avoid very hot water on the treated area for a short while afterwards if the skin looks pink.

Warning signs that need a doctor

Pain that is new, severe and unexplained, or that comes with fever, weight loss, chest symptoms, a hot swollen joint or loss of strength, is not a job for electrotherapy. Get a medical assessment first.

You can book a visit through the booking page, and the Bibwewadi page explains how our home visits are planned around local traffic.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of ift therapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment to decide whether this modality or hands-on method is appropriate
  2. Short-term symptom relief to calm pain or tissue irritability
  3. Guided movement, exercise, and correction work once tolerance improves
  4. Progression toward function so the patient does not stay dependent on passive care

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

IFT Therapy in Bibwewadi: questions patients ask

How is IFT different from TENS?
Both use electrical pulses through skin pads. IFT uses two higher-frequency currents that cross and combine in the tissue, which is intended to reach deeper structures with less skin discomfort. The physiotherapist chooses between them according to where the pain is and how you respond.
Will it be painful?
It should feel like a strong tingling or a gentle pulsing, never painful. You are asked to tell the physiotherapist if it feels sharp or burning, and the intensity is reduced straight away.
Is a power socket needed at home in Bibwewadi?
The unit is a portable device. The physiotherapist will check how it is powered and that it is safe to use in your room before starting. Tell us if you have an unusual or unreliable power supply.
How many IFT sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number. IFT is used for a short course to reduce pain so you can exercise, and the physiotherapist reviews whether it is helping at each visit. If it is not, it is stopped.
