Dry Needling Therapy at Home in Gangadham, Pune

Proper Care Physiotherapy offers dry needling at home in Gangadham for persistent muscle knots in the neck, shoulders and forearms, such as those caused by helmets, handlebars and laptop work. It is used selectively, with consent and screening first, and always alongside exercise and posture changes.

Dry needling uses very fine, solid needles, the same kind used in acupuncture, pushed into a tight, tender knot in a muscle, commonly called a trigger point. The aim is to reduce that muscle's tightness and pain so that the area can move better. It is performed by physiotherapists trained in it, and it is meant to be one part of a plan that includes exercise.

The dry needling therapy page gives an overview. This page deals with the commuter's version of the problem in Gangadham, and, just as importantly, with who should not have it.

Tight knots from helmets, handlebars and screens

Trigger points tend to build where a muscle is held in one position for hours. Three common sources of them in this part of Pune are:

  • Riding with a helmet. The head tilts up to see through slow traffic, the neck extends, and the muscles at the base of the skull and the top of the shoulders stay tense.
  • Gripping handlebars at the junction. Constant braking loads the forearm and shoulder blade muscles.
  • Screen work at home. A laptop on a low table pulls the head forward and overworks the upper trapezius and the muscles between the shoulder blades.

People in this situation often describe a deep, tight ache that is sore to press, sometimes with a headache or pain that refers to the arm. Many improve with exercise and posture work alone, so needling is considered only if a tight spot keeps limiting progress.

Is it right for you?

At the first visit the physiotherapist examines the muscle, finds the tender knot and checks that the pain is truly muscular. If a nerve root, a disc or a joint is the real source, as in some of the cases on our back pain page, needling will not solve it. Evidence for dry needling is encouraging for some neck and shoulder pain in the short term, though studies vary in quality and the benefits are modest. We therefore recommend it selectively, and not as a first-line treatment.

Who should not have dry needling

  • People taking blood thinners or with a bleeding disorder, because of the risk of bruising and bleeding.
  • Anyone with a fear of needles, or who does not want it. Consent is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any moment.
  • People with an infection or an open wound in the area, or with a fever.
  • Those with a weakened immune system, uncontrolled diabetes or poor healing, unless a doctor agrees.
  • Pregnant women in the first trimester, and people with a pacemaker or similar implant, in whom special caution applies.
  • Areas over the lungs, where a needle could cause a collapsed lung, are only treated by someone trained to do so safely.

We also avoid needling over a lymphoedema-prone limb, or over a joint replacement area or a recent surgical site.

How a session works at home

You settle in a position where the muscle is relaxed, often lying on your side or on your stomach on the bed. The physiotherapist washes their hands, cleans the skin, and uses a sterile, single-use needle that is discarded after the session in a sharps container that the physiotherapist takes away. You may feel a brief prick, a cramp-like twitch or a deep ache, which is usually a sign the muscle is releasing. Afterwards, soreness like a hard workout is common for a day or two, and small bruises can appear. Gentle stretching and movement follow, then exercise advice.

After the session

  • Keep moving gently. A warm shower and light stretching can ease soreness.
  • Go easy on heavy gym work and very long rides until the soreness fades.
  • Drink water and take a rest if you feel lightheaded.
  • Fix the cause: adjust the helmet strap and seat position, and raise the laptop.

Reactions that need medical attention

Contact a doctor or go to an emergency department if, after needling, you develop:

  • breathlessness, chest pain or a sharp pain on breathing in, particularly after treatment near the upper back or shoulder;
  • a large, spreading or very painful swelling at the site, or fever;
  • numbness, weakness or tingling that does not fade quickly;
  • fainting or severe dizziness.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of dry needling therapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment to decide whether this modality or hands-on method is appropriate
  2. Short-term symptom relief to calm pain or tissue irritability
  3. Guided movement, exercise, and correction work once tolerance improves
  4. Progression toward function so the patient does not stay dependent on passive care

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

Dry Needling Therapy in Gangadham: questions patients ask

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
The needles are similar, but the approach differs. Dry needling targets tight, tender spots in muscle as understood in modern physiotherapy, while acupuncture follows traditional principles. Both are performed by trained practitioners.
I ride to work every day near Gangadham Chowk. Will it help my neck pain?
If the pain comes from a tight muscle knot, it may ease it for a time. Lasting relief depends on exercise and on changing the riding posture, helmet fit and seat set-up. The physiotherapist will check these too.
Does it hurt, and can I say no during the session?
Most people feel a brief prick and a twitch or deep ache. You can stop the treatment at any moment, and you are asked for consent before it starts.
Can I have dry needling if I am on blood thinners?
Usually not, because of the risk of bleeding and bruising. Tell the physiotherapist about every medicine you take. If needling is not suitable, we use other approaches such as manual therapy and exercise.
