Myofascial release is slow, sustained pressure and stretch on tight muscle and the tissue wrapped around it. A Proper Care physiotherapist can use it at home in Bibwewadi for strain from repetitive work and sloping lanes, such as tight forearms, calves or hips. It is applied after assessment and followed by movement, not offered as a stand-alone fix.
Some pain does not come from an injury but from repetition: gripping a handlebar day after day, kneading dough, climbing the same slope, standing in the same place. The muscles and the connective tissue around them tighten and become tender. Myofascial release is one way to ease that tightness. See myofascial release therapy for the overview. This page covers how it is used on home visits in Bibwewadi.
Fascia is the thin connective tissue that wraps muscles and links them together. In myofascial release, the physiotherapist applies sustained pressure or a gentle stretch to a tight area and holds it, often for a minute or more, waiting for the tissue to soften. Some practitioners describe this as releasing the fascia, but it is not clear that fascia itself changes. A likelier explanation is that the pressure alters how the nervous system treats the area, reducing tension and pain for a time.
The evidence is limited and mixed. Short-term gains in pain and movement are reported, but there is no clear advantage over other soft-tissue techniques. That is why we describe it as a way to prepare for exercise, and not as a treatment that corrects a problem by itself.
Each of these has a movement fix as well as a hands-on one. For example, calf tightness needs graded strengthening and a sensible walking plan, which the knee pain page also touches on.
The physiotherapist asks where the tightness is and what aggravates it, and then examines the area. You lie or sit in a comfortable position with the area uncovered or lightly clothed. The therapist applies a slow, steady pressure or stretch with the hands, forearm or fingers, adjusting to your feedback. You may feel a warm, deep ache that gradually fades. Treatment may be done on one or several areas, and it ends with movement and a stretch you can repeat.
It pairs naturally with manual therapy, which works on joints as well as muscles, and with dry needling for those who are suitable and prefer it.
Myofascial release is generally gentle, but we avoid or adapt it for people who:
If you have persistent pain with fever, night pain, weight loss or numbness, we ask you to see a doctor before treatment.
A calf that is swollen, warm and painful on one side, chest pain, sudden breathlessness or weakness that is spreading need medical attention, not soft-tissue release. If the physiotherapist finds signs of any, treatment stops and you will be referred.
You can book through the booking page, and the Bibwewadi page lists the neighbourhoods we visit.
At Home
The usual course of myofascial release therapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.
Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:
