Slip Disc Physiotherapy at Home in Bibwewadi, Pune

A slip disc, or disc prolapse, often follows a lift: a gas cylinder, a heavy bucket, a sack or crate. A Proper Care physiotherapist visits you at home in Bibwewadi, checks the back and the nerves, explains what is likely to be happening, and begins safe movement and treatment with a plan you can follow between visits.

A disc problem usually has a moment you can name. The cylinder carried up to the third floor. The bucket of water lifted from the floor with a twist. The crate loaded at the end of a long day. In a part of Pune where Market Yard is nearby and many homes depend on deliveries carried up stairs, those moments are common.

Our slip disc physiotherapy page explains the condition. Here we describe the local lifts that trigger it and what a home session does. For an adjacent area, see slip disc care in Gangadham.

The lifts that cause trouble

  • Cylinders and water cans. Heavy, awkward and often carried by one hand up a flight of steps, which combines weight with a twist.
  • Loading at work. Anyone handling produce, cartons or sacks, whether at a trader's shop or a home business, lifts repeatedly, often with the back rounded.
  • Bending to the floor. Picking up a child, a bucket or a mop with straight legs puts a large bending force through the lower discs.
  • Lifting after sitting. The discs are least tolerant of load first thing in the morning and after a long period of sitting.

What the first visit looks for

Disc pain can stay in the back, or the irritated nerve can send pain, tingling or weakness down a leg. The physiotherapist asks which of those you have, how it behaves with sitting, bending and coughing, and whether anything is getting worse. They then test movement, leg strength, reflexes and sensation. They do not diagnose a disc on a scan result alone, since scans of people with no pain also show disc changes. If you have an MRI report, keep it ready, but the examination matters more.

The aim is to find the position and movement that ease the symptoms and use it. For many people that is a particular repeated movement of the spine, a modified resting position and a gradual return to walking. The sciatica treatment page covers leg symptoms from nerve irritation more fully, and the back pain page covers the back.

Learning to lift without hurting again

Once the pain has settled, the plan turns to prevention. The physiotherapist watches you pick up something heavy at home and adjusts the technique: feet apart, load close, knees and hips bending, trunk braced. We then practise the specific lifts that are part of your life, such as the bucket, the cylinder or whatever you handle at work, and strengthen the muscles that support the spine. If your work demands very heavy lifting, we talk about breaking it up, using a trolley or sharing the load.

Between visits

  • Walk a little and often. Short, frequent walks usually help more than one long one.
  • Avoid lifting from the floor and sitting for long periods while the leg symptoms are active.
  • Sleep with a pillow between the knees if you lie on your side, or under them if you lie on your back.
  • Do not bend and twist at the same time, for instance when putting a bag on a shelf.

Signs that need immediate attention

A disc that presses on the nerves at the base of the spine can cause cauda equina syndrome. Difficulty passing urine, losing control of the bladder or bowels, numbness in the saddle area or weakness in both legs mean you should go to an emergency department straight away. Rapidly worsening leg weakness or a foot that drags also needs urgent assessment. In these cases the physiotherapist will not continue treatment.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of slip disc physiotherapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, or rapidly worsening leg weakness
  • Severe trauma, fall, or suspected fracture involving the spine
  • Fever, unexplained weight loss, or back pain with significant illness symptoms
  • Pain so severe that standing, walking, or resting is impossible despite basic support

Common Questions

Slip Disc Physiotherapy in Bibwewadi: questions patients ask

Do I need surgery for a slip disc?
Most disc problems improve without surgery. Surgery is considered when there is progressive weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe pain that has not responded to a reasonable period of treatment. The decision is made by a doctor, and the physiotherapist will tell you if they think you should be assessed.
Should I rest in bed until the pain goes?
Short rests in a comfortable position are fine, but prolonged bed rest usually slows recovery. Gentle movement, short walks and the exercises you are given tend to help more than staying still.
I carry sacks or crates at work. When can I go back?
That depends on your symptoms, the weight and your strength. The physiotherapist will advise a gradual return, usually with lighter loads first, and with technique changes. They will not recommend a particular date without examining you.
Is the gas cylinder delivery to my Bibwewadi building a problem?
Gas cylinders are heavy and awkward on stairs. While a disc is irritable, ask the delivery person to bring it to your door, or have a family member carry it. The physiotherapist can also show a safer way to move it once you have recovered.
