Stroke Rehabilitation at Home in Undri, Pune

After a stroke, the flat itself becomes the training ground: the bed, the passage to the bathroom and the lift lobby. A Proper Care physiotherapist visits your Undri home, assesses movement, balance and walking after the stroke, starts treatment, and teaches the family how to help safely between visits, within the limits your doctor has set.

A stroke changes how a person moves through the same flat they have lived in for years. The bedroom is no longer one step from the bathroom, the lift lobby is a long way down a corridor, and a wheelchair has to pass a door that never had to admit one. Recovery at home in Undri is therefore as much about the building as about the body.

Our stroke rehabilitation page explains how recovery works in general. This page describes what the home route looks like for families in Undri's flats and societies.

Reading the flat the way a physiotherapist does

On the first visit, the physiotherapist walks through the home with the family and looks at things most people overlook:

  • Doors and thresholds. Can a walker or wheelchair pass? Is there a raised sill at the bathroom or balcony door?
  • The bed. Is it high or low? Which side is the weak one, and where can the patient push up from?
  • The bathroom. Wet tiles, the height of the toilet seat, and whether there is a rail or a stool for bathing.
  • The route out. The distance from the flat door to the lift, the lift's size, and what happens when it is out of service.
  • Space to practise. A clear passage for walking, a chair against a wall for standing practice, and a window or balcony for fresh air.

These details decide which exercises are safe on day one and which must wait.

What the home sessions work on

The physiotherapist tests strength, tone, sensation, balance and walking in both sides of the body, and also looks at how the patient moves from lying to sitting and from sitting to standing. Treatment then concentrates on practical goals: rolling and sitting up, standing with support, shifting weight onto the weak leg, using the arm in everyday tasks and, when ready, walking with a stick or walker. Repetition of small movements matters, which is why the family's help counts.

Some people also need help with swallowing, speech or memory. Those are handled by other professionals, and we say so when a referral would help. Where the person is mostly in bed, see our page on physiotherapy for bedridden patients, which explains positioning and chest care.

Teaching the family

  • Learn where to stand: usually on the weak side, close to the patient, with a hand on the trunk rather than pulling the weak arm.
  • Keep the weak arm supported on a pillow or table when sitting, never dangling.
  • Encourage the patient to look and turn towards the weak side, which helps awareness.
  • Repeat the few exercises you were taught, at the same times each day, rather than many at random.
  • Note fatigue, new pain or swelling and tell the physiotherapist.

If a parent is the patient and one adult child is doing most of the care, say so. The plan should leave the caregiver with energy and a way to ask for help. Our elderly physiotherapy in Undri page covers daily safety for older adults who live at home.

Getting to follow-up appointments

Hospital reviews and scans involve a car journey through slow traffic around Undri Chowk. We help the family plan: practising car transfers at home first, arranging a time that avoids the busiest hours, and packing a stool or walker. After surgery rather than stroke, the same planning is covered under post-surgery rehabilitation in Undri.

Another stroke or a new emergency

Call an ambulance immediately for a sudden new weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, new trouble speaking or seeing, a severe sudden headache, a fit, or reduced alertness. That is an emergency, not something to raise at the next session. Chest pain, breathlessness, or a swollen painful calf also need prompt medical care.

To arrange home visits, use the booking page or see home physiotherapy in Undri for how the service covers the area.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of stroke rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Sudden facial droop, slurred speech, new one-sided weakness, or sudden confusion
  • A fall with head injury, severe dizziness, or sudden inability to stand safely
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, or rapidly worsening neurological function
  • Severe swallowing concerns or medical instability during activity

Common Questions

Stroke Rehabilitation in Undri: questions patients ask

Can stroke physiotherapy begin before we leave the hospital?
Yes. If your doctor has advised physiotherapy at home, you can book in advance so that the first visit falls in the first days after discharge. Keep the discharge summary and medicine list ready, because the physiotherapist works within them.
Is a wheelchair practical in our Undri flat?
Often it is, if doors are wide enough and the lift can take it. The physiotherapist checks widths, thresholds and turning space during the first visit, and shows the family safe ways to transfer from bed to chair.
How can we help without making the patient dependent?
By letting the patient do what they safely can, and helping only with the part they cannot. The physiotherapist shows exactly where to stand and what to say, so that the family encourages movement instead of doing everything for them.
How soon will the weak arm or leg recover?
It varies a great deal from person to person, depending on the type and size of the stroke and how early rehabilitation begins. We do not promise timeframes. The physiotherapist measures progress at each visit and adjusts the plan.
