Home Physiotherapy in Shukrawar Peth, Pune

Home physiotherapy in Shukrawar Peth, Pune: a physiotherapist visits old-city homes for knee and back pain, stroke recovery and post-surgery care.

Shukrawar Peth is one of the oldest settled parts of Pune, and it still feels like it: narrow lanes, temples at street corners, shops on the ground floor and families on the floors above. People here often live in the house their parents lived in, and some would sooner put up with a painful knee than leave it. That is the reason physiotherapy in Shukrawar Peth makes most sense when the physiotherapist comes to the house, and that is what Proper Care Physiotherapy does.

Our physiotherapists travel from the clinic base on Katraj–Kondhwa Road to homes in the peth. Shukrawar Peth is covered under our Swargate home physiotherapy service, so the treatment pages linked below are the Swargate ones. If your address is at the Hirabaug end of the peth, the Hirabaug page describes that side in more detail.

A peth with a long memory

Shukrawar Peth was set up in 1734, named by Bajirao I, and was earlier called Visapur. Wikipedia notes that it housed military establishments in its early years, including a gun foundry and stables. Today its streets hold the Akra Maruti and Ram Mandir, Nehru Stadium at the Swargate end, and the large vegetable market, Mahatma Phule Mandai. The post office, Shukrawar Peth (Pune), serves pin code 411002, the same code as Pune City, Raviwar Peth and Nana Peth.

For a visiting physiotherapist, history matters in a practical way. Houses were built for large joint families, with high thresholds, steep internal stairs and bedrooms that double as sitting rooms. The people in them are often elderly, often together with children and grandchildren, and often reluctant to rearrange anything.

Steep stairs, low seats and floor living

At the first visit we look at how you actually move through the day, and in older peth homes that usually means a few particular things:

  • The staircase. Steps can be tall and the rail, if there is one, may be short. We practise on a few steps first, and teach a safe way up and down before suggesting you attempt a full flight.
  • Sitting and rising from the floor. Many households still eat, pray and rest at floor level. Getting down and up is a leg-strength test in itself, and it is a common reason older people stop doing things they enjoy. See knee pain physiotherapy in Swargate for how we approach it.
  • The bathroom. Raised thresholds and wet floors are a frequent cause of falls. We suggest changes that cost little, such as a non-slip mat or a stool, before suggesting anything bigger.

We do not judge the structure of a building; that is a job for an engineer. In 2023 the Pune Municipal Corporation reported demolishing dangerous wadas in several peths, including Shukrawar Peth, and serving notices on others. If you have been told your building is unsafe, follow the civic advice first. Physiotherapy can continue wherever you are staying.

Who books a visit here

Most calls come from a younger member of the family, often someone who lives in another part of Pune or abroad, arranging care for a parent or grandparent. The typical needs are:

Match days, temple mornings and market lanes

The peth has a rhythm of its own. When a match or event is on at Nehru Stadium, which was built in 1969 and sits at Swargate in Shukrawar Peth, roads at that end fill quickly. Around the Mandai the lanes are busiest in the morning, with handcarts and customers. And in festival weeks, especially Ganeshotsav, the traffic police close or divert large parts of the central roads. In 2026, for instance, Laxmi Road was closed to vehicles from Sevasadan Chowk to Tilak Chowk in the evenings during the festival.

We book a time window rather than an exact minute, and in festival weeks we ask for the date and the nearest chowk so that we can suggest a morning slot or a way in. Tell us if there is a procession route near your lane.

Getting here from the south

The route from our base runs north along Pune–Satara Road to Swargate. That road has been narrowed by the underground metro works between Swargate and Katraj, so queues can form at the Swargate end in the evening. From Jedhe Chowk, Tilak Road leads into the peth. Mornings and early afternoons are generally easier than evenings.

Walking practice away from the crowd

Lanes with two-wheelers, handcarts and unpredictable crossings are a poor first place to walk after a fall or an operation. We usually start inside the house, then use the stairwell or terrace if it is safe, and move to a quiet lane at an off-peak hour with someone beside you. A garden such as Saras Baug, which has a jogging track, is better for longer walks once you are steady on level ground.

Nearby areas we cover

If you live closer to the Swargate junction or south of Satara Road, these pages may fit better: Shankar Sheth Road, Mukund Nagar, Parvati, Gultekdi and Salisbury Park.

When a doctor should see you first

Seek emergency care for sudden weakness on one side, a drooping face, slurred speech, chest pain, a fall after which a limb will not take weight, or a hot swollen calf following surgery. Back pain with new loss of bladder or bowel control also needs a hospital urgently. If the physiotherapist sees any of these during a visit, treatment stops and you will be advised to go to a doctor.

Common Questions

Home physiotherapy in Shukrawar Peth: questions families ask

Do you visit upper-floor homes in old peth buildings with no lift?
Yes. Home physiotherapy exists for exactly this situation. The physiotherapist assesses how the patient manages the stairs and practises them only when it is safe, working on leg strength and balance indoors until then. A family member is shown how to stand beside the patient.
Which pin code does Shukrawar Peth use?
Shukrawar Peth (Pune) post office uses 411002, a code shared with Pune City, Raviwar Peth and Nana Peth. Write the lane, the landmark and the building name in the address, because several peths sit close together.
My mother sits and eats on the floor. Can physiotherapy help her get up and down?
Often it can. The physiotherapist tests her leg and hip strength, then builds up a safe way to lower and rise, using a sturdy chair or low stool as a first step. We never ask anyone to change a lifelong habit overnight.
Can a visit be arranged during Ganeshotsav, when roads are closed?
We can try. Tell us the date and the nearest chowk when you book, and we will look for a morning slot or suggest the easiest way in. Visits are booked as a time window, and we tell you if the physiotherapist is delayed.
