Post-Surgery Rehabilitation at Home in Pimpri, Pune

For many families in Pimpri the hardest part of coming home after surgery is the staircase. A physiotherapist visits your home to rehearse the climb, set up the bed and bathroom, and begin gentle exercise within your surgeon's limits, so that the first weeks are planned and not improvised.

In a building with a lift, a patient comes home and rests. In a walk-up, they come home and climb. That one fact shapes the first week of recovery for many families in Pimpri, and it is why we start the plan before the patient is carried through the door.

The general information on rehabilitation is on our post-surgery rehabilitation page. Here we describe how a visit in Pimpri deals with stairs, small rooms and early recovery. Visits are booked in advance because the area is one of the farther zones from our South Pune base; the Pimpri area page explains how.

The first climb

For an operation on the leg, hip, spine or abdomen, the first staircase needs thought. The physiotherapist will ask for the number of flights, the width of the steps and the position of the rail, and then agree a method with you. For a knee or hip, the usual teaching is that the stronger leg goes up first and the operated leg goes down first, but the surgeon's instructions come before any general rule. A helper stands below on the way up and below on the way down, close enough to catch, not close enough to cramp the patient. A chair on each landing makes rests easy.

  • Do the climb once, slowly, on the day of arrival, with a helper at each stage.
  • After that, limit trips to what is needed in the first week.
  • Carry nothing on the stairs; pass bags up separately.

Setting up a small home

Rooms in Pimpri homes can be compact, and every piece of furniture counts. Before the patient arrives, clear a path from bed to bathroom wide enough for a walker. Place a firm chair with arms where the patient will sit most. Keep the day's items at waist height, and put a light within reach of the bed. After a hip or knee operation a raised toilet seat or a stool can make the bathroom safer, and the physiotherapist can say which of these is worth the cost for this patient. Squat toilets are a special case, and we discuss options with the surgeon's advice in mind.

Weeks one to six, in outline

Early exercise is gentle and regular: breathing and circulation work, careful movement of the joints near the operation, and short walks that grow step by step. Sessions check pain, swelling and the way the patient moves, and the exercises progress as the surgeon allows. Over time the patient moves from bed and chair to standing, from the room to the corridor, and from the corridor to the stairs. If your operation was on a knee, our knee pain physiotherapy page describes the joint side in more detail.

No two recoveries are the same, and we do not promise a timetable. The physiotherapist reviews progress at each visit and tells you plainly whether things are on track.

Who should be at home

For the first week or two, one adult should be present for most of the day. If the household works shifts, share the roles: one person for the morning transfers, another for the evening walk. The physiotherapist can write the exercise plan in simple terms, so that whoever is at home knows what to do.

Call the surgeon or an ambulance if

The wound becomes red, hot or leaks, there is a fever, or one calf is swollen, painful and warm. A sudden shortness of breath, chest pain or a fall with severe pain also needs urgent care. Stop exercising and phone your surgeon, or go to the nearest emergency department if you cannot reach them.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of post-surgery rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation in Pimpri: questions patients ask

Our flat is on the second floor and there is no lift. How will the patient get up after discharge?
Plan it before discharge. Depending on the operation, the surgeon may advise how many steps are allowed, whether a helper should carry any weight and when to rest. The physiotherapist can show the family the safest technique and, if booked early, be present for the first climb.
Do you visit homes in Pimpri for people coming out of hospital?
Yes. With the long drive from South Pune, Pimpri visits are fixed in advance. Book as soon as you know the discharge date, and the first visit can fall in the first days at home.
What should I tell the physiotherapist about the operation?
Share the type of surgery, the date, the surgeon's instructions on weight-bearing and movement, and any complications. Show the discharge summary at the first visit.
Does the physiotherapist also check the wound?
The physiotherapist looks at the area around the wound for swelling, redness and warmth, and tells you and your surgeon about any concern. Wound dressing and stitches remain with the surgical team.
Can the patient start before the first follow-up with the surgeon?
Often yes, if the surgeon has advised physiotherapy after discharge. The physiotherapist follows the written instructions and does not go beyond them.
