Post-Surgery Rehabilitation at Home in Hadapsar, Pune

Proper Care Physiotherapy supports recovery after knee, hip, spine, fracture and other operations at home in Hadapsar. The physiotherapist works within your surgeon's instructions, plans the bed, bathroom and staircase with you, and builds movement and walking back step by step, with a plan the family can follow between visits.

Rehabilitation after surgery begins before the patient reaches home. Several hospitals are listed along the Hadapsar and Magarpatta side of Solapur Road, including Noble Hospital, Sahyadri Hospital and, in Sasane Nagar, Life Care Multispeciality Hospital, so many local families go through an operation close to home and then face the harder part: recovering in their own flat. The days before and just after discharge are the right moment to plan.

The post-operative rehabilitation guide covers the stages in general. Here we look at planning for a Hadapsar home.

What to settle before discharge

  • The surgeon's instructions. Ask in writing how much weight may go on the leg, which movements to avoid, and when the stitches or cast will be checked. We work within those limits.
  • The bed and seating. A bed that is too low makes standing up painful after a knee or hip operation. A firm chair with arms is easier than a sofa.
  • The bathroom. Check the threshold, the floor and the toilet type. A raised seat or a stool, if the surgeon agrees, may be needed.
  • The stairs or lift. Know whether the lift takes a stretcher or a wheelchair, and whether there is a step between lift and door.
  • Who will be there. Decide who helps in the first week, and who can learn the exercises.

If you book before discharge, the first visit can land in the first days at home, when stiffness and fear of moving are usually greatest.

The first trip down the stairs

For many Hadapsar patients the staircase is the real obstacle. Low-rise blocks without lifts are common, and a follow-up appointment, X-ray or wound check means going down and back up. We practise on your own steps once the surgeon allows it. The usual approach is to go up with the stronger leg first and down with the operated leg first, holding the rail with a helper below, and to rest at each landing. If the staircase is not yet safe, the physiotherapist may suggest delaying the trip or arranging help to carry the patient.

What a visit includes after common operations

  • Knee or hip replacement. Bending and straightening exercises, getting in and out of bed, walking with a walker or sticks, and protecting the new joint from positions the surgeon has restricted. See the knee replacement recovery guide.
  • Fracture repair. Gentle movement of the nearby joints, weight-bearing as allowed, and rebuilding strength and balance.
  • Spine or abdominal surgery. Safe ways of rolling, sitting up and walking, breathing exercises, and early posture advice.
  • Shoulder or arm surgery. Protected movement within the surgeon's limits, and tips for dressing and washing with one arm.

Each visit checks the wound area, swelling and pain, and adjusts the exercises. We do not change a surgeon's protocol, and we pass on concerns for the surgeon to judge.

Recovery between visits

  • Do the exercises in short sets through the day, rather than once for a long time.
  • Use pain medicines as your doctor advised so that you can move; unmanaged pain slows recovery.
  • Walk a little more each day, using the aid as instructed.
  • Keep the leg elevated when resting if told to, and move the ankles often.
  • Look at the wound daily, and keep follow-up appointments.

Signs to report to the surgeon or hospital at once

A wound that is red, hot, swollen or leaking, a temperature, increasing pain that medicines do not ease, or a calf that becomes swollen, tender and warm needs prompt medical attention. Breathlessness, chest pain or fainting is an emergency. Do not carry on with exercises until you have been seen.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of post-surgery rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation in Hadapsar: questions patients ask

Can I book physiotherapy before I leave the hospital?
Yes. Booking ahead means the first visit can fall in the first days at home. Keep the discharge summary and the surgeon's written instructions ready, because they set the limits we follow.
Our Hadapsar building near Magarpatta Road has a lift. Does the staircase still matter?
The lift can break down or may not take a wheelchair or stretcher. The physiotherapist checks the lift, the corridor and any step at the door, and practises the stairs as a back-up when it is safe.
Will you change what my surgeon told me?
No. We follow the surgeon's protocol and pass on concerns for the surgeon to decide. If the wound or pain worries us, we will advise you to contact the surgeon or hospital.
How long will I need physiotherapy after surgery?
It varies with the operation, your general health and how you progress. We review at each visit and tell you plainly how things are going, with no promised number of sessions.
