Dry Needling Therapy at Home in Shankar Sheth Road, Pune

Dry needling uses fine, sterile needles to release tight, tender points in muscle. On Shankar Sheth Road it is often considered for riders whose neck and shoulder muscles knot up from helmet weight and a long reach to the handlebars. A trained physiotherapist assesses you at home, screens carefully for safety, and uses needling only alongside exercise and posture changes.

Ride the length of Shankar Sheth Road at rush hour and the strain on the upper body is easy to feel. The head, inside a helmet, is held forward to watch the traffic, and the shoulders creep up as you grip the handlebars and brace for sudden stops at Seven Loves Chowk or the Golibar Maidan junction. Do that twice a day and the muscles at the top of the shoulders and the base of the skull often develop tender, ropey spots, called trigger points, that refer pain into the head, neck or shoulder blade.

Dry needling is one way a physiotherapist may treat those points. Our dry needling therapy page explains the technique in general. Here we describe how it is used, and when it is not, for people along this road.

Neck and shoulder knots from riding

  • Helmet weight with the chin poked forward. The muscles at the back of the neck work hard to hold the head up and forward.
  • Shrugged shoulders. Tension while braking and weaving loads the upper trapezius, the muscle between the neck and the shoulder.
  • Handlebar reach. A long reach rounds the upper back and keeps the muscles between the shoulder blades on stretch.
  • Work after the ride. A day at a desk or counter, looking down, often follows, with little chance for the same muscles to rest.

What happens during needling at home

The physiotherapist first examines the neck, shoulders and upper back to find the source of the pain, checks the nerves if there are arm symptoms, and decides whether needling suits you. With your consent, the skin is cleaned and a thin, sterile, single-use needle is inserted into a trigger point. You may feel a brief twitch or a deep ache, which usually settles quickly, and the needles are disposed of safely afterwards. Near the chest wall and the top of the shoulder, technique is adapted to keep the needle well away from the lung.

Evidence suggests dry needling can reduce neck and shoulder muscle pain in the short term for some people, especially when combined with exercise; it is not a standalone fix. The session continues with stretching, strengthening for the deep neck and shoulder blade muscles, and changes to your riding position. For people who would rather avoid needles, myofascial release and manual therapy work on the same areas by hand.

Who should not have dry needling

  • People with a strong fear of needles, or who simply do not want it; other treatments work too.
  • Anyone on blood thinners or with a bleeding disorder, unless the physiotherapist judges it safe after discussing it with you.
  • Over infected or broken skin, swelling from lymphoedema, or a recent injury.
  • In early pregnancy, and for people with a weakened immune system or poorly controlled diabetes, where extra caution or a different approach is needed.
  • Children, and anyone unable to give clear consent or describe what they feel.

After the session

Soreness like that after a hard workout is common for a day or two, and small bruises can appear. Keep the neck and shoulders gently moving, use a warm compress if it helps, and carry on with the exercises. On the scooter, bring the handlebars closer or sit further forward if you can, drop the shoulders at each signal, and take an occasional break on longer trips.

Seek urgent medical help for breathlessness or chest pain after needling near the chest, or for neck pain with fever, a severe headache, or weakness or numbness in the arms. To book, use the booking page; the Shankar Sheth Road area page explains how visits work.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of dry needling therapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment to decide whether this modality or hands-on method is appropriate
  2. Short-term symptom relief to calm pain or tissue irritability
  3. Guided movement, exercise, and correction work once tolerance improves
  4. Progression toward function so the patient does not stay dependent on passive care

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

Dry Needling Therapy in Shankar Sheth Road: questions patients ask

I ride along Shankar Sheth Road twice a day and my neck is always tight. Is dry needling right for me?
It may be, if the examination shows tender trigger points that reproduce your pain and you are comfortable with needles. It is used together with exercises and changes to your riding position. If you prefer not to have needles, hands-on treatment and exercise can address the same muscles.
Does dry needling hurt?
The needles are very fine, so insertion is usually felt only briefly. A twitch or a deep, cramping ache in the muscle is common and passes quickly. Soreness for a day or two afterwards is normal.
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
They use similar needles but are based on different reasoning. Dry needling targets trigger points and muscle tissue identified through a physiotherapy examination, rather than traditional acupuncture points.
Is it safe if I take aspirin or another blood thinner?
Tell the physiotherapist about every medicine you take. Blood thinners raise the risk of bruising and bleeding, so needling may be avoided, limited to certain areas, or replaced with another treatment. Do not stop any medicine on your own to have needling.
