Slip Disc Physiotherapy at Home in Sadashiv Peth, Pune

A disc problem often follows months of bending and lifting at floor level. Proper Care Physiotherapy treats slip disc at home in Sadashiv Peth, examines the spine and leg, watches how you lift the things you really lift, and builds a graded programme so you can return to household tasks safely.

A slip disc, or disc prolapse, rarely comes from a single clumsy moment. More often it follows months of bending and lifting, and then one ordinary movement, such as picking up a bucket, tips the balance. Old peth homes, where gas cylinders, water cans and bags of grain often have to be moved at floor level and then carried up stairs, give a disc many chances to be overloaded.

Our slip disc physiotherapy guide explains what is happening inside the spine. This page is about handling and lifting in a peth household, and about how treatment is planned at home.

The lifts that put the most strain on a disc

  • Floor-level loads. Cooking gas cylinders, water cans, boxes under the bed and heavy utensils are all collected from the floor, which means bending the spine forward under load.
  • Lifting and twisting together. Putting a load onto a shelf or the back of a scooter while turning is more demanding than a straight lift.
  • Bending in tight spaces. Narrow bathrooms and cramped kitchens push people to bend at the waist rather than the knees.
  • Picking up children and grandchildren. Lifting a child from low furniture involves a forward-bent, unsupported back.
  • Sneezing, coughing and straining. These raise pressure inside the disc, which is why a bad sneeze can set it off when the back is already irritated.

What the home assessment looks for

The physiotherapist asks about the pain's location, whether it travels into a leg, which positions make it worse and any numbness or weakness. Then comes a physical examination of the spine's movement and of leg strength, reflexes and sensation. Your imaging report, if you have one, is read alongside it, but the examination matters more: some people have a disc bulge on a scan and little pain, while others have severe pain with a modest finding. Leg-dominant symptoms are covered under sciatica treatment in Sadashiv Peth.

Being in your home lets us review the actual lifts. We will watch you pick up the cylinder, the bucket or the child, and show a safer way to do it with the same objects. Often this is a matter of getting closer to the load, bending the knees and hips and letting the stronger muscles take over.

How treatment progresses

Early on the aim is to calm the pain with positions and movements that suit your pattern, sometimes with a pain-relief device such as IFT when pain prevents you from moving. Next come gentle exercises that bring back movement and teach the deep trunk muscles to work again. Later we build strength and graded lifting, so that you can return to the household tasks you need to do. Most disc problems are managed without surgery, and surgery is considered only for particular situations, which a doctor assesses.

We never promise a time frame. Disc pain tends to improve in stages, with good days and bad ones, and the plan changes as you do.

Handling loads at home in the meantime

  • Ask someone else to move cylinders and cans during the early weeks. If you must lift, slide the load first, then lift with the knees bent and the load held against your body.
  • Store frequently used items between knee and shoulder height.
  • Brace your abdomen lightly before you sneeze or cough, and avoid bending forward at that moment.
  • Avoid long spells of sitting on soft sofas or low beds, which let the back slump.

Disc symptoms that need urgent assessment

Difficulty passing urine, new loss of bowel control, numbness in the saddle area or weakness that spreads in a leg need emergency care at once. Severe night pain that no position eases, or back pain with fever, should also be seen by a doctor before physiotherapy continues.

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, or rapidly worsening leg weakness
  • Severe trauma, fall, or suspected fracture involving the spine
  • Fever, unexplained weight loss, or back pain with significant illness symptoms
  • Pain so severe that standing, walking, or resting is impossible despite basic support

Common Questions

Slip Disc Physiotherapy in Sadashiv Peth: questions patients ask

Will a slip disc need surgery?
Most are managed without surgery, using movement, exercise and time. Surgery is considered when there are serious nerve signs, or when severe symptoms persist despite proper treatment. A doctor decides this, and your physiotherapist will refer you if the signs point that way.
Can I carry a gas cylinder up the stairs in my Sadashiv Peth building while I recover?
It is wiser not to in the early weeks. Ask a family member or the delivery person to bring it up, or use a trolley if the stairs allow. When you return to lifting, we will first practise the movement with a lighter weight.
Is bed rest helpful for a slipped disc?
Short rests in a comfortable position can help on the worst days, but long bed rest usually slows recovery. Keep moving gently within what is comfortable, and follow the position and exercise advice your physiotherapist gives.
Do I need to see my scan report before treatment starts?
A report is helpful, so keep it ready, but treatment starts from your symptoms and what the physiotherapist finds on examination. If you have no scan, you can still begin, and we will tell you if one is needed.
