Frozen Shoulder Physiotherapy at Home in Hirabaug, Pune

A frozen shoulder stiffens slowly, then holds on for months, and every task that needs an arm overhead or behind the back becomes a chore. We assess the shoulder at home in Hirabaug, work out which stage it is in, and match stretching and strengthening to that stage, with your doctor's advice in mind.

The shoulder does not freeze overnight. For weeks it just aches a little and catches when you reach for the top shelf; then lifting the arm to comb your hair or reaching behind to fasten a blouse becomes impossible, and the ache wakes you at night. By the time people call a physiotherapist they have often been working around the stiffness for some time.

The basic facts about the condition are on our page on frozen shoulder physiotherapy. This page covers how we treat it at home in Hirabaug, and what to expect from each phase.

Three stages, three different approaches

A frozen shoulder usually passes through phases, and what helps in one phase can hurt in another.

  • The painful, freezing phase. The joint is irritable. The aim is to settle pain with gentle, pain-limited movement, not to stretch hard. Hands-on techniques are light.
  • The stiff phase. Pain eases but movement is limited in all directions. Firmer stretching is now appropriate, along with work on the muscles around the shoulder blade.
  • The thawing phase. Movement returns gradually. Strength and control are rebuilt, and the aim is to restore overhead and behind-the-back reach for daily use.

Working out which phase you are in, from your history and from how far the arm moves, is the first job of the assessment. A physiotherapist who treats every shoulder the same way will make some people worse.

The doctor, the injection and the physiotherapist

Hirabaug has a lot of clinics close at hand, and many people see an orthopaedic doctor first. Doctors may prescribe pain medication, suggest a steroid injection to settle severe pain, or order an X-ray to rule out other causes. None of this replaces movement work, and physiotherapy does not replace medical diagnosis. Bring any prescription or report to the first visit.

The injection, if one is given, often makes it easier to do the exercises for a period, so it is worth planning your sessions around it. If your shoulder pain began after a fall or an injury, your doctor should check for a fracture or tear before the stretching starts.

What a home session includes

The physiotherapist measures how far the arm goes forward, sideways and rotating outward, since rotation is usually lost first. Treatment may include gentle joint mobilisation, soft-tissue release for tight muscles, and a few exercises to do at home: pendulum swings, a towel stretch behind the back, and sliding the hand up a wall. Our page on manual therapy in Hirabaug explains the hands-on part.

We also look at your home. High shelves in the kitchen, a clothes line above head height, and low pegs for a bag are everyday traps. Moving what you use daily into an easy zone is part of the plan.

Dressing, sleeping and daily tasks

  • Dress the stiff arm first, and undress it last.
  • Tuck a pillow under the sore arm when lying on your back, or hug one when lying on the other side.
  • Carry bags on the other shoulder, or use a trolley bag.
  • Do short stretching sessions several times a day, not one long one.

Our article on why shoulder pain gets worse at night goes further into sleep, and frozen shoulder mobility exercises shows the basic movements. There is no fixed timetable; frozen shoulder can take many months, and the physiotherapist will review your progress at each visit.

When shoulder pain needs a doctor urgently

Seek medical help at once if shoulder or arm pain comes with chest tightness, sweating, breathlessness or pain spreading into the jaw, since these may be heart symptoms. A hot, red, swollen shoulder with fever, or severe pain after a fall, also needs a doctor before any stretching.

To have your shoulder assessed at home, request a visit, and see the Hirabaug area page for how visits work here.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of frozen shoulder physiotherapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

Frozen Shoulder Physiotherapy in Hirabaug: questions patients ask

Should I have an injection first, or start physiotherapy?
That is a decision for you and your doctor. Physiotherapy can start whether or not an injection is planned, and many people use both. Tell the physiotherapist about any injection or tablets so the exercises can be timed around them.
Why is the pain worse at night?
Lying on or near the sore shoulder squeezes the joint, and with no distractions the ache is more noticeable. A pillow supporting the arm in front of you, or sleeping on the other side with a pillow hugged to your chest, often helps. The physiotherapist will help you find a position.
Does it matter that I live in an older building near Hirabaug Chowk with few shelves at a comfortable height?
It can help. We look at where you keep things you reach for daily and suggest moving them into a zone between waist and shoulder height while the shoulder is stiff. That small change saves the joint from many painful reaches each day.
Will stretching hard make it recover faster?
No. Forcing a stiff, irritable shoulder usually raises the pain and sets you back. Stretching helps most when it is firm but tolerable, held briefly and repeated often. The physiotherapist will tell you how much discomfort is acceptable at your stage.
