When the cantonment was set up in 1817, the firing ranges were placed here, and the name has stayed with the place ever since. Today it is a mixed residential neighbourhood on Shankar Sheth Road, and our physiotherapists visit homes here for the same reasons they visit elsewhere in the cantonment: recovery after surgery, stroke, knee trouble and the unsteadiness that comes with age.

Where Golibar Maidan sits on the map
Golibar Maidan lies on Jagannath Shankarsheth Marg, better known as Shankar Sheth Road, the road that joins Swargate to Pulgate by way of Golibar Maidan. Some visits from our base to Camp therefore pass through it. Mapping data places it in Pune Cantonment under the 411001 pin code. The area has a Golibar Maidan chowk, and the police advisory for Eid namaz in April 2023 shows how the area copes with large gatherings: traffic was diverted around the chowk through Bishop School and Command Hospital, via Napier Road and CDO Square, and by Seven Loves Chowk, Salisbury Park, Lulla Nagar and Bhairoba Nala. Buses heading to Kondhwa were sent by way of Gangadham Chowk.
That list is a useful guide to the roads around you. When you book, name the chowk or road you use most, such as Seven Loves Chowk, CDO Square or Napier Road, and the physiotherapist will plan the approach.
Apartment blocks, lifts and the last few steps
Property listings show a number of apartment projects around Old Golibar Maidan, so some patients here live in buildings with a lift. A lift helps, but it does not remove every barrier. The questions we ask at booking are practical ones:
- Does the lift go from the flat down to the street, or does a flight of steps remain at the entrance?
- Is the lift large enough for a wheelchair, or a patient on a stretcher chair after discharge?
- Is the bathroom door wide enough for a walker, and is there a step into the shower?
- Is there a seat in the lobby for a rest before the next stage of the journey?
Answering these before the first visit saves time, and it often changes which exercises are chosen first.
Recovering at home near the hospitals
The cantonment has a cluster of hospitals, and the 2023 police advisory names Command Hospital among the roads around Golibar Maidan chowk. People recovering from joint replacement, fracture or abdominal surgery often return home within days, and the next weeks decide how well they regain movement. A caregiver's day in Golibar Maidan
Many families here rely on one adult at home, or on a helper who comes by the day. A physiotherapist can include them in the session so that practice carries on between visits. We show how to assist a transfer without lifting, how to guard the stairs, and how to notice when pain or swelling is worse than it should be. If you are working from home or away at the office, tell us who will be present and at what hour; the first visit goes better with the main helper in the room.
Space for walking practice
Recovery often requires graded walking. Indoors, a corridor or a hall will do for the first weeks. When the physiotherapist judges it safe, practice can move to the building's lobby, the compound or a nearby road at a quiet hour, with a helper beside the patient. We do not assume there is a park or track to use here, so the plan is built around the corridor, the compound and a quiet stretch of road, and any open ground you propose is checked for access and surface first.
Neighbouring parts of Camp
Pulgate is the next stop along Shankar Sheth Road, with its own page at Pulgate, and the bazaar side lies towards Lashkar. Along MG Road the pace is that of a shopping street.
When to see a doctor before physiotherapy
Go to an emergency department if there is chest pain, breathlessness, a drooping face, slurred speech, sudden weakness on one side, a hot swollen calf after surgery, or a fall followed by severe pain or an inability to put weight on a leg. Physiotherapy is for afterwards.
