Coming home after an operation changes the questions. In hospital, someone else decided when to stand and how far to walk. At home in a Viman Nagar flat, you and your family decide, and a few of the choices matter: how to get from the car to the lift, how to use the toilet safely, and how much to do on the first day.

Before the car reaches the gate
Some preparation makes the first day much easier. Ask the society whether the lift can be held for you, and whether a wheelchair or walking frame will fit through the lobby. Find out where the car can stop closest to the entrance, since street parking near the shops is tight. Clear rugs and loose wires from the route to the bedroom and bathroom, put a firm chair with arms where you will rest, and keep the things you use most at waist height.
If the surgery involves a hip, knee or spine, keep the discharge summary and the surgeon's restrictions where the physiotherapist can see them. Instructions on bending, twisting, weight-bearing and wound care decide what is safe in the first weeks.
What recovery visits involve
The first visit usually checks pain, swelling, movement and the way you stand and transfer. The physiotherapist then teaches the key tasks of the early days: getting in and out of bed, sitting down and rising, using a walker or sticks, and managing the bathroom. Later sessions progress the range of movement, strengthen the muscles around the operated joint or spine and work on balance and walking quality.

- After spine surgery: posture, safe ways to roll and sit, and graded walking, with limits on bending and lifting as advised.
- After a fracture: weight-bearing as allowed, restoring movement in neighbouring joints and rebuilding strength once the bone has healed enough.
- After abdominal or chest surgery: breathing exercises, supported coughing and gentle walking.
Taking the first trips out
Recovery is also a matter of regaining ordinary life. Follow-up visits to the surgeon, suture removal and physiotherapy reviews all mean leaving the flat. Practise first inside the building: out of the lift, along the corridor and down to the society garden. Once those are comfortable, a short walk on a society path is a good test. Signs to report to the surgeon or hospital at once
Contact the surgeon or go to an emergency department for a fever, a wound that is red, hot, leaking or opening, sudden severe pain, calf pain with swelling or warmth, breathlessness or chest pain, new numbness or weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control after spinal surgery. These need medical review straight away. The physiotherapist will tell you if what they find during a session also needs a call to your doctor.
