Sahakar Nagar, Pune
Coming home after an operation is a transition with its own risks: the car, the gate, the steps, the bathroom. A physiotherapist visits your home in Sahakar Nagar, reads the surgeon's instructions, plans the first days around your house and guides the exercises that rebuild movement, strength and confidence.
The journey home from hospital to Sahakar Nagar has a few specific hurdles. The drive along Satara Road can be slow, the car seat may be low, there may be a step at the gate and another at the porch, and the bedroom may be on the first floor. For someone with a fresh operation on a hip, knee, shoulder or spine, each of these needs a plan.
The post-surgery rehabilitation guide explains the stages of recovery. This page is about the practical side in a Sahakar Nagar household: preparing the house, making the first week safe, and building on it.
A call before discharge helps. The family can describe the house, and the physiotherapist can suggest what to arrange: a firm chair with arms, a raised toilet seat or a stool for the bathroom, a clear path from bed to toilet, no loose rugs, and perhaps a bed on the ground floor. They can also explain how to help the patient into the car, usually sitting first and swinging the legs in together, with the seat pushed back and slightly reclined.
It is worth keeping the discharge summary, the operation note and the surgeon's rehabilitation sheet in one folder. These set the limits on bending, twisting, weight-bearing and wound care, and the physiotherapist works within them.
The physiotherapist checks pain, swelling, circulation and wound condition, without removing dressings unless that has been agreed with the surgeon. They then practise the movements that matter in the first days: getting out of bed, standing, walking short distances with the walker or sticks, using the toilet, and the safe way up and down the entrance steps. Breathing and circulation exercises are often added, particularly after major surgery, to reduce the risk of chest problems and clots.
Later visits increase the range of movement and the strength of the muscles around the operated area. After a joint replacement, for instance, the programme progresses from gentle bending and straightening to strengthening and walking without an aid, depending on what the surgeon allows. Our knee replacement rehabilitation and hip replacement rehabilitation guides describe these stages.
Outdoor steps are often the first real obstacle. The physiotherapist teaches the order for steps, which for most operations is the stronger leg first going up and the operated leg first going down, with the aid following; the surgeon may have specific instructions that override this. When the patient can manage the steps with a helper, a short walk along the garden path or the lane comes next, on level ground and in good light.
Recovery is rarely a straight line, and some days are heavier than others. We ask patients to note how the area feels after exercise, and use that to guide the next session instead of following a fixed schedule.
Contact the surgeon or go to the nearest emergency department if the wound opens, leaks or becomes red and hot, if there is fever, if the calf becomes swollen, tender and warm, or if there is sudden breathlessness or chest pain. A fall at home with new severe pain or inability to bear weight also needs urgent medical review. Treat any of these as a reason to seek care that day.
Use the booking page to request a visit, and tell us the type and date of the operation. If the patient was admitted after a stroke instead, see stroke rehabilitation in Sahakar Nagar. More about the area is on the main Sahakar Nagar page.
