Post-Surgery Rehabilitation at Home in Narhe, Pune

Surgery in or near Narhe is often followed by a quick return to an apartment, with a lift, a lobby and a car park between the patient and the road. A physiotherapist visits your flat, reads your surgeon's instructions, practises the transfers and steps that matter first, and guides exercise to restore movement and strength safely.

People who have an operation at the hospital on the bypass, or in the city, usually come home to a Narhe apartment within days. The flat is familiar, but the body is not: a new hip or knee, a healing fracture or a recently operated spine changes how you stand up, how you use the toilet and how you get down to the car.

The post-surgery rehabilitation guide covers recovery in general. Here we describe what changes when the patient lives in an apartment, with a lift, a lobby and a car park, in Narhe.

Preparing the flat

A call before discharge helps. The physiotherapist asks about the layout and suggests changes that make the first week safer: a chair with arms and a firm seat, a raised toilet seat or commode if the toilet is low, a clear path from bed to bathroom, no loose mats, a night light, and the bed placed so the patient can get out on the correct side for the operation. Bathrooms are the greatest risk. A wet tile floor and a patient on a walker call for a non-slip mat and, if possible, a stool in the shower.

Put the discharge summary, the operation note and the surgeon's physiotherapy instructions in one folder. They set limits on bending, twisting, weight-bearing and wound care, and the physiotherapist works strictly within them.

Lift, lobby and car park

Apartment living changes the usual advice about steps. Instead of a garden gate, the obstacles are the threshold of the lift, the gap between lift and floor, and the lobby step. The physiotherapist teaches how to enter a lift with a walker or sticks, where to stand, and how to avoid being rushed by other users. For the car, we practise the transfer: back to the seat, sit down, then swing the legs in together, with the seat pushed back and slightly reclined.

Because the road past Narhe can be slow, a trip for a surgical review may take longer than expected. We suggest carrying water, medicines and a cushion, and choosing a time of day with lighter traffic.

Stages of recovery at home

In the first days, the focus is on safe transfers, short walks, breathing and circulation exercises, and pain control so that movement is possible. In later weeks, the programme builds range of movement and the strength of the muscles around the operated area, then moves to walking without an aid and ordinary tasks, as the surgeon permits. After joint replacement the stages are described in our guides to knee replacement rehabilitation and hip replacement rehabilitation.

Recovery rarely runs in a straight line. Some days are heavier than others, and we use how the area responds to exercise to guide the next step rather than following a fixed timetable. For longer-term issues such as persistent stiffness or back pain after spinal surgery, see back pain physiotherapy in Narhe.

Between visits

  • Do your exercises at the times set, and take pain medicine as advised so you can move.
  • Walk a short distance often, along the corridor, instead of sitting for long periods.
  • Keep the operated limb elevated when resting, if your surgeon advises it.
  • Use the aid until the physiotherapist says otherwise.
  • Keep wound dressings clean and dry as instructed.

Wound, calf or chest warnings after an operation

Contact the surgeon, or go to an emergency department, if the wound opens, leaks or turns red and hot, if there is fever, if the calf is swollen, tender and warm, or if there is sudden breathlessness or chest pain. A fall at home followed by severe pain, deformity or inability to bear weight also needs urgent review.

Booking

Use the booking page to request a visit, and tell us the operation, the date and your building. The Narhe page explains how we manage timing around the bypass.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of post-surgery rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation in Narhe: questions patients ask

Can the physiotherapist visit on the day after discharge?
Often yes, if you book ahead and tell us the discharge date. The first visit focuses on getting in and out of bed, using the toilet, and walking with the aid your surgeon has advised.
Our building has a lift, but the car park is two levels down. How do we manage the follow-up visit?
The physiotherapist rehearses the route with you: the lift, the walk to the car and the car transfer. Having someone with the patient and moving at a comfortable pace makes the trip safer.
What if my surgeon's instructions seem to conflict with the physiotherapist's advice?
The surgeon's instructions take priority. If anything is unclear, the physiotherapist will advise you to check with the surgical team before going ahead.
Which operations do you provide rehabilitation for in Narhe?
We commonly see knee and hip replacements, fracture fixation, spinal surgery, shoulder surgery and abdominal surgery. Tell us what was done and when, and share the operation notes if you have them.
