Post-Surgery Rehabilitation at Home in Kasba Peth, Pune

After surgery, the hard part in Kasba Peth is often the way out: a steep flight of stairs, a high step into the lane and a surgeon's clinic some distance away. A physiotherapist visits within the limits your surgeon has set, restores movement and strength in your own rooms, and prepares you for that first trip down the stairs and the journey to follow-up.

Surgery in a hospital ends with a nurse, a lift and a clean corridor. Recovery in Kasba Peth begins at a doorstep that may be a step above the lane, with stairs beyond it that were hard even before the operation. For a family in an old building, planning the way out and the way back matters as much as the exercises themselves.

Our guide to post-surgery rehabilitation gives the general principles. This page is about doing it from a home in Kasba Peth, whether the operation was on a hip, knee, spine, shoulder or abdomen. It sits within the wider guide to home physiotherapy in Kasba Peth.

Before the first trip downstairs

Almost every patient wants to know when they can use the stairs again, and in this neighbourhood it is a fair question: for some, the stairs are the only way out. The answer is a series of stages, each of which is judged by the physiotherapist and your surgeon's instructions, and none of which is rushed.

  1. Bed and chair. Getting in and out of bed, sitting down and standing up safely, with the leg or the back protected as advised.
  2. Walking indoors. A few steps with a walker or sticks, then to the toilet and back. Rugs and loose wires are removed.
  3. The landing or doorstep. Practising a single step, to learn the foot sequence.
  4. One flight, supervised. Someone walks beside, on the downhill side, and there are rests on the landing.
  5. Out into the lane. Only once the above is steady, and starting with a short, quiet stretch.

A patient who is ready is usually in no hurry to skip these stages. One who is not ready often wants to. The physiotherapist's job is to tell the difference.

What the weeks at home involve

The physiotherapist first reads the discharge summary and any restrictions on weight, bending or lifting. At the first visit we check the wound area from outside, swelling, pain, movement, strength and balance, and ask about medicines for pain. We then set out a plan of exercises with their purpose, for example to straighten a knee, strengthen the hip, or protect the spine, and we show the person at home how to help.

Pain should be manageable enough to move, not absent. If you take pain medicine, a short window after a dose is often a good time to exercise. We may use heat, cold or a portable pain-relief device where suitable. Different operations call for different plans. For example, a knee replacement and a spinal operation ask very different things of the patient, so please never copy a neighbour's routine.

Operations on the knee also overlap with our page on knee pain physiotherapy in Kasba Peth, and back surgery with back pain physiotherapy in Kasba Peth.

If the building changes your plans

The civic body has reported unsafe wadas in Kasba Peth and issued notices, and in June 2026 it told the occupants of 36 unsafe wadas to vacate before the monsoon. Not every old house is affected. But if you are recovering from surgery and have to move at short notice, tell us. The move is itself tiring, the new place may have different stairs, and the plan should follow you. We cannot judge the safety of a structure, so please follow official advice on that.

Getting to follow-up visits

Stitch removal, scans and surgeon reviews mean travelling. A car or autorickshaw to the door is the sensible start. The underground Kasba Peth metro station, opened in September 2024, can come into the picture when you can manage the walk and the stairs at either end. We will tell you when that day arrives, and carry the exercise plan forward.

Signs that need a doctor straight away

Call your surgeon or go to an emergency department for a painful, hot, swollen calf; breathlessness or chest pain; fever; a wound that is red, leaking or opening; severe uncontrolled pain; or a new inability to move or feel a limb. These can be complications that physiotherapy must not treat. Physiotherapy resumes when the doctor agrees.

Getting started

If you are due for surgery, you can book before the operation so that we can prepare the home and explain what to expect. After surgery, use the booking page and share the date and type of operation, the floor and the surgeon's instructions. For older patients, see elderly physiotherapy in Kasba Peth as well.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of post-surgery rehabilitation, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment and symptom mapping to identify what is driving pain, weakness, or poor movement
  2. Early pain relief, movement support, and practical advice to reduce daily aggravation
  3. Strength, balance, mobility, or function-specific exercises matched to the patient’s recovery stage
  4. Progress review, home-program changes, and return-to-routine planning as confidence improves

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation in Kasba Peth: questions patients ask

My mother had a hip fracture fixed and lives on the second floor of an old building with no lift. When can she go downstairs?
That depends on the surgeon's weight-bearing instructions and her strength. We start with bed and chair transfers, then short walks inside the flat, and add the stairs when she can balance and put weight on the leg as allowed. A relative stays beside her on the first attempts.
Can physiotherapy start before I leave hospital?
Hospital physiotherapists usually begin the first exercises. We can speak to the family before discharge about what the home needs, and begin at home as soon as you arrive, within the instructions given.
I am moving to a relative's flat for the recovery weeks. Can you follow me there?
Yes, if the new address is within our visiting area. Give us the address, the floor and whether there is a lift so we can fit the exercises to it.
How will I get to my surgeon's follow-up from a lane in Kasba Peth?
In the early weeks a car or autorickshaw to the door is the simplest choice. The Kasba Peth metro station, which opened in September 2024, is an option later if you can walk the distance at each end. We assess your walking and stairs and advise accordingly.
