TENS Therapy at Home in Mukund Nagar, Pune

TENS is a small battery-powered unit that sends mild electrical pulses through pads on the skin to ease pain for a while. A physiotherapist can use it in your Mukund Nagar home when pain is stopping you from moving, but only after safety checks, and always as a support for exercise and not a replacement for it.

Pain makes people stop moving, and stopping makes the problem harder to shift. TENS, short for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is one way of breaking that loop. Two or four sticky pads are placed on the skin around the painful area, a small unit sends gentle pulses between them, and most people feel a buzzing or tapping sensation that can quieten the pain while it runs.

On our TENS therapy page the technique is explained in general. This page covers when it makes sense in a Mukund Nagar home and when it does not.

When TENS earns a place in the session

  • Pain that blocks the exercises. An acutely painful back, neck or knee that makes the first exercises unbearable can sometimes be eased enough to begin.
  • The days after an operation. Once the surgeon agrees and the wound is away from the pads, TENS can reduce aching around the area. Our page on post-surgery rehabilitation in Mukund Nagar sets out how that recovery is organised.
  • Long-standing pain that flares. Some people with arthritis or persistent nerve-related pain find that TENS takes the edge off a bad evening.
  • A bridge to the next session. Where a flare-up makes sitting or sleeping difficult, learning to use a unit safely may carry a person through a rough few days.

It tends to be less useful for pain that comes from a problem that needs a different kind of care, for example an infection, a fracture or a growing nerve problem. In those cases pain relief would only mask something that needs a doctor.

What the research says, in plain words

Studies of TENS give mixed results. Some people with certain kinds of pain report clear benefit, while trials overall are of variable quality and show that benefit differs a lot from person to person. Relief generally lasts only while the unit is on or soon after. That is why we treat it as an aid for moving, not a stand-alone treatment, and why we stop using it if it is not helping you.

Safety checks before the pads go on

The physiotherapist asks about and checks these before using TENS:

  • pacemakers, defibrillators or other implanted electronic devices, where TENS is not used;
  • pregnancy, where pads are kept off the abdomen and lower back;
  • epilepsy, and any pad placement on the head or neck;
  • skin that is broken, rashy, infected or numb, since you cannot feel if the current is too strong;
  • pads over the front of the neck, over the eyes or across the chest, which are avoided;
  • a history of heart rhythm problems, which needs the doctor's view first.

Never use a unit while driving, riding, sleeping, in a bath or near water.

What a TENS session looks like at home

You sit or lie in a comfortable position, and the skin is cleaned and checked. Pads are placed around the painful area, and the physiotherapist increases the strength until you feel a strong but comfortable tingling, never pain or muscle jumping. It runs for a set period, during which you can often start gentle movements. The session ends with the exercise part of the visit, which is the part intended to produce lasting change. A related method, IFT, uses a different type of current for deeper tissues, and the physiotherapist chooses between them according to your problem.

Pain that should not be masked

If the pain is new and severe, follows a fall, comes with fever, weakness, loss of bladder control or chest symptoms, or is worst at night in a way that nothing eases, see a doctor first. Electrical pain relief must not delay a diagnosis.

Asking about TENS

If you think TENS could help, mention it on the booking page, along with any implants and your medical history. The physiotherapist will decide at the assessment whether it is appropriate. Visit arrangements for the neighbourhood are on the Mukund Nagar service page.

At Home

How a home session works

The usual course of tens therapy, adjusted at every visit to how you respond.

  1. Assessment to decide whether this modality or hands-on method is appropriate
  2. Short-term symptom relief to calm pain or tissue irritability
  3. Guided movement, exercise, and correction work once tolerance improves
  4. Progression toward function so the patient does not stay dependent on passive care

When to seek urgent medical care

Physiotherapy is not the right first step if any of these apply. See a doctor the same day, or call emergency services if symptoms are severe:

  • Recent major trauma, suspected fracture, or sudden inability to bear weight
  • Rapidly worsening weakness, severe numbness, fainting, or sudden loss of coordination
  • Breathing difficulty, chest pain, uncontrolled fever, or signs of infection
  • Sudden neurological change such as facial droop, speech problems, or one-sided weakness

Common Questions

TENS Therapy in Mukund Nagar: questions patients ask

Does TENS treat the cause of my pain?
No. TENS changes how pain is felt for as long as it is on, and sometimes for a short while afterwards. It does not repair a joint, disc or muscle. Its value lies in making movement more comfortable so that the exercises that do help can be done.
Can I buy a TENS unit for use at home between visits?
You can, but ask the physiotherapist first. They can tell you whether it suits your pain, which pad positions are safe for you and how long to use it, and warn you about the people who should not use one. Cheap units vary in quality, so choose a known brand with clear instructions.
I have a pacemaker. Can I have TENS?
No. TENS is not used on anyone with a pacemaker or similar implanted electronic device, because the current can interfere with it. Tell the physiotherapist about any implant at the booking stage, so that another approach can be planned.
Do you bring the machine to the flat in Mukund Nagar?
When TENS is part of your plan, the physiotherapist brings a portable unit and uses it in whichever room is most comfortable for you. You need only a seat or a bed. The unit runs on batteries, so no socket is needed.
